Forgiveness List
The Process of Forgiveness
Unforgiveness is like you drinking the poison and expecting the other person to die!
With unforgiveness in your heart, you are in bondage. You are spiritually handcuffed to that person until you decide to forgive!
Here are 12 simple steps you can use to walk through the process of forgiving someone who hurt you in the past.
1. Ask the Lord to reveal the names of the persons who offended you and the specific wrongs you suffered. Also the names of the people you have hurt.
2. Face the hurt and the hate. If you are going to forgive from your heart, you must let God search the depths of your heart.
3. Acknowledge the significance of the cross. It is the cross of Christ that makes forgiveness legally and morally right.
4. Decide that you will not retaliate by using the information about the offender's sin against them (Luke 6:27-34).
5. Decide to forgive. Forgiveness is a conscious choice to let the other person off the hook and free yourself from the past.
6. Take your list of names to God and pray the Prayer to Forgive for each person on your lists individually. Do not rush through it and blanket prayer all the names at once.
7. Destroy the list. You are now free from unforgiveness.
8. Do not tell the offenders what you have done. Your forgiveness is between you and God unless the offenders have asked you for forgiveness.
9. Do not expect that your decision to forgive will result in major changes in the other persons. Instead, pray for them (Matthew 5:44).
10. Try to understand the people you have forgiven. They are victims also. Freedom is a result of forgiveness in you. In time you will be able to think about the people who offended you without feeling hurt or anger.
11. Thank God for the lessons you have learned and the maturity you have gained. When appropriate, accept your part of the blame for the offenses you suffered.
12. Confess your failure to God and to others (1 John 1:9) and realize that if someone has something against you, you must go to that person (Matthew 5:23-26).
Ephesians 4:32
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
Colossians 3:13
“Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”
Matthew 6:14,15
“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
Luke 6:27, 28
“Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you”
A prayer to Forgive...
Lord, I don't know how to make forgiveness happen.
I can't cleanse my heart or change my feelings
I don't know how to trust, and I'm afraid to hold my heart open.
But today I'm making a choice to forgive.
I know I'll have to choose again and again
until You make forgiveness real and complete in me.
Please God, give me the willingness and strength
to persevere in choosing forgiveness until it is accomplished in me by Your power.
By Faith, I choose to forgive_______________________________ for ________________________________________________________________________.
Father, forgive me for having an unforgiving heart.
Forgive in me all my sinful responses
Father, I let go of all resentments and bitterness’s stored in my heart.
Wash me clean.
Forgive me for all condemning judgments I have made.
Give me a new and right spirit within me that will enable me to hate sin
but look with Your compassion and love upon the sinner.
Heal the wounded heart of the child within me.
Please remove the sting from all the painful memories.
Pour Your love in.
Bless those who wounded me.
In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
